Chicago Sheri

Friday, July 30, 2004

I went to Dominick's last night, while Brad was mowing the lawn, to pick some groceries up for dinner around 8pm.
Sun going down, not many people in the store.
Out in the parking lot was a goose chasing people around the parking lot. As I walked out of the store he was chasing a woman and her 2 kids to their car while they were screaming and running from him.
They got in the car, and then he turned an saw me. Started running for me. I just stopped, waited for him to come up. I didn't run, it's a goose for crissakes! He stuck his neck out at me and hissed, sticking his tongue out at me. I just started laughing at him, I told him, "I'm not scared of you!" He inched closer, hissing at me. I reached out to grab him and he jumped back. The old man that was in line behind me came out laughing at me and the goose having the show down in the parking lot. I tried to lure the goose towards my car, out of the main driveway, making kissy noises at him. He was having none of that. And then went back to chasing some more people.
I was putting groceries in my car, watching people run and scream. I tried to tell them....but they weren't listening to me. "THEY DON'T HAVE ANY TEETH!", I yelled, but they kept running. The goose seemed to really enjoy this.

Then some people were getting out of their car, and he chased them up to the grocery store. He walked in one of the slots of the revolving doors. A small crowd gathered. It was a stand off. No one would cross the gooses line to go in the store. Finally, one guy had enough and walked towards the goose and edged him out from the doors, then he went waddling off to find more people to chase.

That was one pissed off goose.

Ann Coulters article that was supposed to be about the DNC

Riley and Moore's debate transcripts

Last night we were watching a food show, it was like those Unwrapped shows I love on the Food Channel, but this one was on the Travel Channel. One of the things we watched being made was Gummi Bears by Harmony Snacks in Santa Cruz, CA. I went to the cafe in our building today to get some money from the ATM, there is a vending machine next to it, and they had Harmony Gummi's....so of course I had to get them!!
I'll bring you home some tonight Brad!

I keep using "Obama" in place of Dean Martin's "Volare"...can't stop it.....

Weekend went by too fast.
Sunday I went out with Emily and Chris to some antique thing downtown.
It was a little disappointing, admission fee, and no super great deals.
However it was a really nice day out, so it was just nice to be walking around and checking out people wandering around. And of course great company too! I had fun just hanging out with them.
One of Emily's favorite food places is Chicago Diner. I hadn't been there before. I really liked it a lot. We shared a side of mac-n-cheese, I had the garden lasagna with side of rain salad with an italian vinaigrette. I had lots of left-overs to bring home for Brad! I want to take him back there. We sat out back on the patio, just lovely.
Walked around the area checking out the shops. Trying on hats and crazy clothes. Then I bought some Simpsons figures for Brad at Gay Mart
When we got back to their place, the dogs had rolled in some rabbit poop. Nacho (chihuahua) was fine, but Ginger (pitt) was very stinky! So we all headed outside to clean her up, she had such sad eyes, she felt so bad.
Poopie roller! Emily cut me some of her gladiolas to take home. She is such a good date!

They had mostly small dogs today. Brad doesn't like small dogs as much. So I let him take the bigger dogs like Elsa, Bosley (actually Geezer with a new name) and Sammy.
Elsa was doing better this week, even more playful.
Bosley has his own bed and blankets in the lobby of the building, he deserves it. I dont think he likes all the noise of the pups. He was sleeping when I saw him, he likes the privacy.
The small dogs were a little high strung, when the big dogs would come up and try to play nice, they would jump and shriek their heads off.
Rosa is a pitt-mix. Gorgeous face, like to play a little rough but can still be trained through that.

Muffy is one of two peek-a-poos.

Elsa is an 8 year old shepard mix.  She was a bit skittish a first.  Head down low, but then she pressed her body against her kennel giving me the "you can pet me" signal.  I think she was just being submissive.  Very quiet, gentle dog.  Most dogs are young, its unusual to have a dog older than 4.  I checked her file, someone turned her in saying she was too active for them. Bullshit!  She is a very passive dog.  While out walking she met up with a puppy being walked. She was so cute, she sprang into play mode and bounced around with the puppy. Let the puppy paw at her, and was just really sweet.

Geezer is another older dog. They said he is 10 years old, but then in his file said they think he might be even older than that.  He was found abandoned.  In his teeth you can tell he is old, but otherwise he is very active.  Barks for attention in his kennel.  And on his walk, he walked fast.  He seemed to would have like to run....but I am not a jogger.  Very healthy active dog.

Georgi is a favorite of ours.  Only 6 months old but super well behaved.  She has the softest fur, and cute waves to her fur too. Oh yeah...all the dogs had baths recently and smelled so good.  I love fresh doggy smell.  I miss it.  Brad walked Georgi.  He said when he sat down she just dove in his lap. She is super affectionate.  I went and sat with her in her kennel and she dove in my lap too.  It's tough to get a decent pic of her without her looking just like a silhouette since she has black fur.  So no pic does her justice.  She was just so lovey-dovey.  Exactly the kind of dog for our home.

In the train station tonight I saw a guide dog working.I'm always so impressed with them.I'm not sure if his person was blind or something else or if he was just training the dog.I watched them go down the escalator next to me. The dogs back legs were raised up on the escalator step behind him.  He was so calm, cool, and collected he yawned.  Stepped off the escalator like nothing and went right into a crowd of people and just took his time navigating around them. The hustle and bustle of the train station during morning or night-time rush is just an amazing training ground.
There are so many homeless pets and yet people still insist on having bred dogs, buying them. When there are plenty of dogs for free.  I think there are so many other things dogs could do besides be a household pet.  Working with the police, hospitals, rehabs, jails, detention centers, assisted living places, old folks homes. Helping physically and mentally ill people.  It's amazing what dogs can do with some training.  Sensing seizures before they happen.
Amazing.

I stayed up too late last night watching an old silent movie "The Patsy" with Marion Davies.
Then found out at 12:30am Home Movies is showing on Cartoon Network.
I have been wondering where the hell it has been!! I love Home Movies...but that is too late to watch it. But I had to see it again...its the one where Coach McGuirk puts on a kilt and then says "LOOK EVERYONE I'M DANCING, LOOK! LOOK! I'M DANCING!!!" I love that one.
So then I couldn't get out of bed this morning and called in to work saying I hurt my back doing yard work. Yes, I know....I'm just so damned delicate! :P
Brad stayed with me, had a White Castle brunch and then he went home to work on resumes and I went to Heidi's and we were pool chicks.
Being a pool chick IS THE BEST!!! I swam back and forth as we talked, then dried off in the sun, ran a few errands.
So much so....that on my drive back home I decided I think my back is still bothering me...
Heidi said we can be pool chicks again tomorrow.
JOY OF JOYS!!!
I am packing myself some cheesy poofs and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to eat poolside, and bring the comics and crossword to do. Told her to bring her book.
I love swimming and water....it makes me giddy.

I just painted my fingernails "tropicoral" pinkish-peachie
summerlooking
I always like my toenails painted dark, really dark

Brad wasn't feeling well, so I went to see the dogs without him this morning.
I was the only walker, and I got them all out and walked.

I walked Divit first. I think he is 4 or 5, Golden Retriever. Good shape, nice dog. Laid back, the kind of dog we like having around the house with us.

Harriet was next. She was already on hold and will be adopted soon.
She is a 4 year old Rat Terrier. I think she was a stray, she has some old wounds from fleas it felt like.

Roxy....Im not sure what she is. But from far away she looks like a dwarf pig.
She is goofy and likes to play...funny little dog.....

Last was Chevy. A 4 month old Doberman mix. He sits very sweetly in his kennel. As soon as he is out ITS PLAYTIME!!! He likes to play tug-of-war with his leash. Makes lots of funny faces too.

Yesterday was a nice slow day at work.
A local band, Mambo All-Stars, were playing outside during lunch.
They said they normally have a 15 person orchestra, and are playing at Grant Park tonight.
Really enjoyed the music.
A hot Latina asked if she could sit with me, so of course I snuck some pics of her too! :)

It was a bit cold yesterday, an afternoon shower was coming in as I went to my secret refuge of an uninhabited office for some quiet reading. I was so freezing though, I wrapped myself in 2 white tablecloths as blankets as I curled up in front of the window to watch the storm come in.
Luckily no one has found my spot yet....

Been doing lots of landscaping.
Will have pictures later.
It was a barren prairie before and is coming along and looking great.

Sasha was a Pit Bull Mix, I saw a little bit of Boxer in her. Would turn around on her walk a lot just to make sure I was still there.

Petunia was another Pit Bull Mix. Loved her belly being scratched.

Zinger was a Lab mix. Lots of energy and silly. Bounding with happiness. Cute spots on his tongue.

Ariel was a Collie/Airdale mix. Her fuzziness was so cute. She walked so close to me I could feel her brushing up against me as we walked.

Mops was an older mix, about 8 I think. Reminded me a bit of my first dog Sandy.

Friday after work I did spray-on tanning.
I like it, I wont keep up with it though.
I might do it once a year at the beginning of summer just so I dont blind everyone around me by reflecting the sun off my skin.
It's fun for variety.
I'm REALLY dark.
I'll try and get pics.

I walked the dogs yesterday, will post pics later.

Went to Emily's place last night with Brad for dinner. First of all, it's silly but I was really excited about it. I don't get the chance to do group dinner things very often. Everything Emily made was wonderful. Green bean salad, garbanzo bean salad, steaks, carrot cake. YUM!!!

Today Brad's parents are coming and staying throughout Weds. They are helping us with out yard landscaping. YAY for us!

And just a note I havent quite been able to think the words out for:
I live in a suburb, I drive a mini-van, I work for "the man", I like reality TV.
I am so tired of people deciding I am one of the cool people and then get shocked when they find out I drive a mini-van. I like our Pontiac Montana. I like the way it drives, its comfortable. No, I don't rent out a loft or a studio, I own a house. I can still be an open-minded person who loves bathroom humor and work at a bank and live in the suburbs.
People make fun of yuppies for being stuck-up, and close minded, but I know just as many arty people who are the same way. In fact, worse then most yuppie people I know. The yuppie people don't mock something I wear cause it's different then something they would wear, they seem more open to it. But the more arty people I know seem to have more of an image to protect. It can be 125 degrees outside and they still refuse to wear shorts because it doesnt look cool. Go ahead, sweat your ass off.

[CBS 5 News, Phoenix)--The man called the greatest actor of all time has died. CBS 5 News has learned Marlon Brando passed away Thursday in Los Angeles. Brando may be best known for his roles in "The Godfather" and "On the Waterfront". He won oscars for his work in those 2 films. The cause of death is still unknown. Marlon Brando was 80 years old...

New York Post
July 2, 2004 -- A SHOCKING image of a blood-spattered President Bush devouring a headless child is causing an uproar. The drawing by sculptor Richard Serra, based on a painting by Goya, is being used to promote pleasevote.com, billed as "a call to vote the Bush administration out of office." It appears on the back cover of The Nation's July 5 issue. Ironically, Serra, a past recipient of NEA grants, was once praised by First Lady Laura Bush in a White House press release about one of his pieces at a Texas museum. His "Tilted Arc" once graced (or defaced) Federal Plaza in lower Manhattan until it was destroyed in 1989. Pundit Andrew Sullivan labeled the Bush image "an obscenity" and "simple demonization."
